Hola, Brad Hussey here! I’m a husband and father from Canada who has been making a living online as a marketer, course creator and freelancer since 2012. I teach freelancers, makers and everyday entrepreneurs how to make an honest living online.
What is Marketing Honestly?
I started MarketingHonestly.com because I was tired of sacrificing my faith and values when marketing & selling my products and services online.
And frankly, the online business world is still in its “Wild West” stage with very little regulation or accountability and far too much dishonesty, smoke & mirrors and plenty of room for people to be taken advantage of.
I want to change that. Or at least, be a trustworthy source for the everyday entreprener trying to provide for their family with their business.
Marketing Honestly is my way of providing a truthful and accessible approach to teaching & enabling the everyday entrepreneur, creator and maker to build and sell legitimate products and services online (without needing to resort to unethical marketing tactics that trick people or emphasize profit & personal gain at the expense of others).
We live in an ultra-fast-paced connection economy, and it seems like every day there’s a new “business opportunity” to buy into, “marketing tactic” to implement or “guru” you must follow in order to get rich quick, so you can retire early and spend the rest of your days on the beach, umbrella drink in hand.
Of course, I like a beach and umbrella drink as much as the next gentleman.
But I also like having a purpose, and serving people that aren’t myself.
And I believe it’s possible to provide a meaningful living for your family by building a business that doesn’t sacrifice your faith, integrity or values.
When it all changed
At the beginning of 2019 I began experiencing major stress & anxiety around my business, chasing more money, hitting revenue goals, and maintaining the image that I was a successful entrepreneur.
So I found myself casting my faith aside and resorting to unethical marketing tactics in order to maintain the image (and the money).
And at end of 2019, I found myself quickly falling out of love with my business — which I’d been building since 2012. At some point, it became less about serving people and providing for my family, and more of a fast frenzy to make as much money as possible.
But no matter how hard I tried, no matter which tactic I tried, and no matter how much money I spent on gurus, coaching and tools, I just couldn’t:
- See major growth in my revenue
- Find enjoyment in my work
- Feel good about my mission in business
- Sleep well
Ultimately, my passion fizzled out, and I found myself completely unmotivated to fire up the computer for another day of torture.
And after a long work day, shutting down the computer didn’t shut down my worrying.
Every day felt like a new failure.
Finally, I just couldn’t take it any more.
I threw my hands up, revisited the faith I’d hid away from everyone, and cried out for help,
“God, I don’t know what I’m supposed to do any more. I’m lost and I don’t know where to go. What do you want me to do?”
And I turned to my wife, and shared my struggles with her, which was hard, because I didn’t want to worry her.
But she’s an amazing woman, and rather than panic, she imparted spiritual guidance and entrepreneurial wisdom that ultimately led me to realizing things needed to change.
Here’s the gist:
I believe God allowed me the dignity to follow my own selfish pursuits, so that I could see how empty those pursuits truly were. He wanted me to feel the discomfort and pain of my struggle in order to help me re-order both my life and my business to align with my calling, my faith, instead of worshiping at the altar of the almighty dollar.
Then the inspiration started flowing.
The spark of passion came back.
And that newfound inspiration and passion formed the foundation of my mission for this website.
To provide everyday entrepreneurs with truthful & accessible training so they can build honest businesses that don’t sacrifice on their ethics & values.
Core Values & Principles
Here are the values & principles this website will abide by:
As a Catholic, I keep Jesus at the center of my personal life, and I plan to do the same for my business. In the past, I’ve specifically kept God out of my work, for fear of being offensive or inconvenient to people… but Jesus wasn’t afraid to be offensive or inconvenient. Even Mother Angelica said, “If you’re not a thorn in somebody’s side, you aren’t doing Christianity right.”
So, although this website is not religious in nature, I am, therefore everything I create will come from a Christ-centered perspective.
Honesty is the best marketing
People are smart and can smell stinky and dishonest marketing from a mile away, so in order to get people to buy your stuff, you either have to be very sneaky, find weak points and exploit their emotions (bad), or you could just be honest and upfront about everything and encourage the customer to make the right choice for them (good).
I’m not saying you should forget about the art of marketing, and “just build it and they will come”… Nay, marketing is both an art and science and must follow certain conventions in order to be effective. I just believe that radical honesty has a welcome place in modern marketing.
The word “Honest” is defined in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as:
Free from fraud or deception: Legitimate, Truthful.
Accessible Training for the Everyday Entrepreneur
Not everyone wants to get rich with their online business, buy the latest Tesla, hustle 24/7 and wrap their entire identity around their business. Many people would be happy to work from home, spend more time with their families, and make a comfortable income so they can get on with what matters in life.
The everyday entrepreneur is the hard working lady or gentleman who knows what “enough” is for them. Whether your goal is to earn an extra $1000/month with your side-hustle or to earn a full-time living with your online business, I aim to help you achieve that by providing accessible content, valuable guidance and affordable courses that empower you on your journey.
Transparency When Selling
I’m just a simple man, running a solo operation, and I don’t rely on outside funding in order to pay the bills and provide for my family. Therefore, I must sell valuable and useful products, services and solutions to you — my audience — in order to get paid and run my business. I believe that the small business that’s transparent about selling products and services from the get-go is the right way to run a business.
I believe there’s nothing inherently immoral about sales, marketing or making money; it’s when businesses are opaque about their monetization strategy that we must be skeptical. My monetization strategy is as such:
- Provide valuable guidance, training and unique content for free
- Establish a trusting relationship with my audience
- Offer you relevant products and services for a fair price
No Trash Talk
I will not trash-talk specific marketers or companies for the sake of making me look better by comparison. Again, people are smart and can come to their own conclusions.
Approach everything I do with humility. I don’t know everything about marketing, I’m guilty of committing many marketing no-no’s in the past, and I’m not a better person than others because I’ve been able to make a living as a self-employed business owner.
Building a business, and learning how to be a better marketer should be fun. I like to be silly, make bad jokes and inject humour in nearly anything I can.
Welcome to Marketing Honestly!
Hugs & high fives,
